When it comes to weddings, it’s easy to get caught up in the big-budget venues, perfectly curated Pinterest boards and trying to meet everyone else’s expectations. But let’s not forget what your wedding ceremony is really about: you two. Your personalities, your relationship, your story. And that’s exactly what your ceremony should reflect.
A relaxed, light-hearted ceremony with a touch of humour and heaps of personality will stay in your guests’ memories long after the fancy canapés and chair covers are forgotten. You don’t need a stately home or a luxury castle to have a magical wedding. Whether it’s on a beach, in a forest, up a mountain, or in your local social club, what makes it amazing is you.
Take Ian and Catherine, for example. I had the absolute pleasure of marrying them a few weeks ago in Blantyre Vics Social Club. Now, I’ve refereed many a match on the pitch just outside that venue in years gone by, so it held a special place in my heart too. Ian and Catherine didn’t go for flashy or formal. Their story was real and moving – Ian had almost lost his life on the way back from a foreign holiday. That brush with death gave them the nudge to say, "Life’s too short – let’s do this."
They asked for a ceremony that was relaxed, light-hearted, and full of love. And that’s exactly what we created together. It was heartfelt and fun, the kind of ceremony where you laugh, you cry, and you feel genuinely uplifted. Ian and Catherine were delighted with how it turned out – and so were their guests.
The beauty of a personalised ceremony is that there are no rules. You can walk in together. You can include your kids. You can share a wee dram or tie the knot with a handfasting ribbon made by your gran. You can have your dog as ring bearer or dance down the aisle to your favourite 90s tune. It’s your day, your way.
And if you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry – that’s where I come in. I’ll work with you to craft something that feels like you, not a carbon copy of someone else’s wedding. You bring the stories, the laughs, the quirks – I’ll bring the structure and the calm on the day.
Your wedding day should feel like home. Comfortable, joyful, and filled with people who get you. So wherever you choose to celebrate, make sure the ceremony is one that makes you smile just thinking about it.
I’ve popped a wee video of Ian and Catherine’s ceremony on here too – it’s a perfect example of how magic can happen in the most down-to-earth places.
Ready to start planning? Let’s make something brilliant together.
