Hi, I'm Andy.

Wedding celebrant, Marriage Officer, and the person who will make sure your ceremony sounds like you.

Andy McWilliam, wedding celebrant, Glasgow

I'm a wedding celebrant based in Glasgow and a Marriage Officer with Celebrants Scotland, which I co-founded. That means the ceremony I conduct is your legal marriage — there's no need for a separate registry office ceremony. It's just the two of you, the people you love, and a ceremony that actually sounds like you.

An unusual route into weddings

Before becoming a celebrant, I spent 30 years as a police officer with Strathclyde Police and then Police Scotland as a Detective Inspector. It's not the obvious background for a wedding celebrant, but it gave me two things that matter on the day.

The first is knowing how to speak to a room. I have an extensive background as a public speaker, having delivered lectures for many years to significant audiences, including Detective Training courses, university courses, and child protection services. I've also presented evidence in high-profile legal proceedings, some of which resulted in the conviction of serial killers. After that, standing up in front of your guests is the easy part.

The second is staying calm when there's a lot going on. I also spent 15 years as a match official in the Scottish Premiership, making decisions in front of crowds who didn't always agree with me. A late bridesmaid or a forgotten ring doesn't rattle me — and couples tell me that's what they notice most. I keep them calm.

How I work

Every ceremony I write starts with getting to know you: how you met, what you love about each other, and how you want the day to feel. Then I write a ceremony that's entirely yours, with as much laughter or emotion as suits you. Want a handfasting, a quaich, or an idea you've come up with yourselves? We'll build it in. Rather keep it simple? That's fine too.

I'll also guide you through the legal side. You submit your marriage notice to your local registrar, and I make sure you know exactly what's needed and when.

Award winning, but still loving it

I'm proud to be an award-winning celebrant, named among the top 50 celebrants in the world in 2026. The part I love most hasn't changed, though. I get to stand with two people at the moment they become a married couple and help them enjoy every second of it.

I also conduct funerals. You can read more on my funerals page.
